With over 25 years of experience in saddle fitting and saddle manufacturing, I wanted to make sure that visiting this site was just as an unique experience as it is to visit our showroom and workshop, particularly for our interstate and overseas customers.
This means that in addition to being able to browse the range and buy as you can in our store you can also take a look at some videos and information on; saddle fitting, new products, design innovations and how we manufacture our saddles.
Our Heritage…
To tell you a little about myself, I first started my leather apprenticeship at Passier & Son in Germany when I was 15 years old Riding track work and a few races at the time, I was able to combine my love for horses and with a craft.
Moving to Australia in 1985 I started my own saddlery business manufacturing race saddles and exercise saddles. Even with many other reproductions out there today, there is still nothing like it and I am proud that our customers really believe in our product. I have some customers coming back to me after 25 years telling me their saddle is still in good condition.
Our Achievements…
Peter Horobin Saddlery has been a collaborative creation my wife Julie and now with our children Rhys & Marlee working in the business too.
Something that I think is important is that Julie, myself and our staff over the years have listened to our customers and kept learning and researching and have really continued to develop our products over the last 20 years. It is a pleasure to create a hand-crafted product in a disposable and commodity driven market place and I am happy that our clients are happy because of the quality of our products and our service.
I have had some very proud moments over the years, but my very first one was to be asked to make a bridle for the president of Argentina!
Another exciting achievement was in 1997 when I was the first saddler in Victoria to be accredited with an award to be a saddle trainee assessor.
Then, in 2000 I won the contract for the Australian pentathlon team for the Olympics. I made 15 saddles for this event and it was because of the experience in equine back health, and the custom fit of the saddle that won me this opportunity.
We were the first company to book a trade stand at the very first Equitana and I have been invited to give lectures in more than 10 countries, throughout Europe and Asia..
I was then a part of the Rolex World Cup in Vegas in 2007 where I was the assistant official saddler to my Canadian Partner Jochen Schleese for the games.
Saddlefit 4 Life…
I have completed extensive hours of research, all hands on with some of the most prestigious names in the equine community. From learning from a well known vet from his dissection of a horse to see the damage of what an ill-fitting saddle can cause, to watching and working with top national and international riders Brett Parbery and German Gold Medalist Heike Kemmer and other professionals. This first hand information has been incredible and has allowed me to develop new innovations and saddlefit 4 life based on what is best for both horse and rider.
The Future..
With both my children now involved in the business Julie & I are delighted that the future of Peter Horobin Saddlery will be in good hands. Rhys is following
in my footsteps as a saddler and Marlee who works with Julie to manage the growth of the business has developed her own designer brand of luxury leather goods -Marlee May.
I am so proud of how far I have come, and I am always willing to learn more..
